How To Make A White Rose Buttonhole

The steps outline in this video is very simple, explaining how to make a simple white rose buttonhole.

From these basic steps, you will be able to create your own buttonhole with your own design.

You can choose any type of flower, leaf or material for your buttonhole.

Below, florist Trish Haunton demonstrates the basic steps of making a white rose buttonhole.

How To Make A Floral Buttonhole

Duration : 02:38mins

What You Need :

  • A white rose
  • 3 ivy leaves
  • scissors
  • silver rose wire
  • 20 gauge stub wire
  • floral tape
  • a pearl ended pin

The Steps

1. Using the scissors, cut the stems of the rose and the ivy to 3cm.

2. Holding the rose between thumb and forefinger, pierce it with the silver rose wire.

3. Gently pull the wires down in line with the stem.

4. Wrap one wire around the other and the stem 3 times. This will stop the flower from opening too much.

5. Using a piece of stub wire, pierce the green part of the rose below the petals.

6. Feed the wire half way through and bend the wires down in line with the stem.

7. Pick up one piece of stub wire and twist it around the stem and the other wires.

8. Turn the ivy leaf over. Follow the stem up along the central vein of the leaf and stitch the rose wire through the leaf. The stitch should sit halfway between the stem and the edge of the leaf.

9. Hold the wire stitch between thumb and forefinger. Gently form a loop with the wire.

10. Bend both along the line of the stem.

11. Twist one wire around the stem and second wire.

12. Repeat until all 3 ivy leaves are wired.

13. For safety and comfort, tape the flower from top to bottom covering all the wires.

14. Twist the wire into the tape. Do the same for the leaves.

15. Place the flower on top of the leaves. Ideally, the leaves will sit at 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.

16. Once you are happy with the arrangement, bend the wires so they all sit neatly then tape the stems together.

17. Using the pearl ended pin, pierce the stem all the way through.

Traditionally, a buttonhole is pinned on the left hand lapel with the stems pointing up down.
