How To Dry Flowers At Home

Learn how to dry flowers from your garden. You have a garden with beautiful flowers that you are proud of. Instead of letting the flowers to dry out and fall to the ground, make use of your garden's flowers.

This new hobby of yours could turn out to be an interesting one. You work with nature, so you can relax your mind. Remove your mind off work once in a while. This is a good hobby.

What do you do with the dried flowers?

Good question. You can make crafts out of it. You can make dried flower arrangements and hang on walls in your home. You can even decorate the mirror. Or you can decorate a gift with it. There are so many things you can do with them.

You can also make a wreath using dried flowers. That wreath can be hung on your door for Thanksgiving. When your neighbours look at your creation, you'll be glad you learned how to dry flowers.

So, exactly how to dry flowers?

Here, we'll discuss on 3 methods, which are air-drying, silica gel drying and microwave drying. There is another method called the freeze drying but that will be discussed in another session.

  • Air-drying
This is simplest form of drying flowers. No special equipment is needed.

What you do is you harvest your flowers when in bloom, preferably in the late morning, to avoid dew collecting on your flowers.

Tie a bunch of them with a rubber band. Just hang upside down and leave it dry. This might take 3 to 4 weeks. Hang in a dry and dark place.

The type of flowers that suitable for this type of drying are cattail, baby's breath, pussy willow and others.

  • Silica gel drying
For this method, you will need silica gel. In a plastic container, pour in the silica gel granules and make a layer.

Position your flowers by inserting the stems that you cut and make sure the flowers are facing up. When the position is fixed, pour the rest of the silica gel granules around the flowers.

Pour gently as to avoid changing the shape of the flowers.

Lastly, cover the whole plastic container with silica gel. Leave it for around 1 week. Check out your dried flowers after that.

  • Microwave drying
Drying flowers using the microwave limits you to the number of flowers you can dry at the same time. But, it is fast.

Also, the drying quality depends on the microwave power and the flower type.
