Have You Heard Of A Formal Linear Arrangement?

A formal linear arrangement is one that emphasizes on lines and movement in an arrangement.

I know it is quite hard to understand it, but you will understand better when I give you an example below.

Lines can be straight or curvy and in moving in any direction. We would like to incorporate these lines into our arrangement to make it more interesting.

Let's see an example.

Below is an example of a formal linear arrangement I made.

The materials I use for this arrangement are

• cymbidium orchids

• spanish moss

• dried salix

• mini cabbage flower

• berries

• fruit casa

• paku leaves or ferns

• frangipani branches

• pothus leaves

• calathea leaves

• snakegrass

Usually, in this arrangement, very distinctive materials are used. They are very strong in character.

As you can see, a formal linear arrangement consists of basically four parts. One part goes vertically up, one part goes down, one part goes to the side and the other part goes at the back.

These are four parts that must exist in this arrangement. Do not create too many directions in this arrangement because it will look crowded.

It can be on a low container as well as a high container, but the proportions must be right.

Here, I used a high container. To make the arrangement more stable, I put some stones at the bottom of the container to make it more stable.

For the vertical part, I used the cymbidium orchids.

Then, I made the sides using the frangipani branches because they portray such beautiful lines.

For the back direction, I used dried salix.

Spanish moss is used as the bottom part.

When I've created the four parts, I start building the center. But before that, I cover the foam with ferns.

Next, I use the mini cabbage flower as the focal flower. So, I cut it short and insert it at the center.

I also added berries and fruit casas at the back because this is an all round arrangement.

I also added pothus leaves which is quite common in an formal linear arrangement. That is, to add a big leaf at the sides.

I also inserted calathea leaves along the vertical line. This is to connect the vertical part to the center because the gap is too wide.

To make this arrangement more interesting, I added snakegrass to create more lines.

And your formal linear arrangement is done.
