Flower Arranging Steps

In flower arranging, there are 3 types of flowers to make an arrangement.

The mass flower, filler flower and line flower. Each of them plays an important part in an arrangement.

Let me make you understand more about the characteristics of each flower type.

Mass Flower

Mass flowers are the center of attention of a flower arrangement. They are usually a big flower on a single stem. And they are usually round in shape.

They are also called 'focal' flowers because of the focus they attract to viewers.

Examples of mass flowers are magnolias, roses, tulips, sunflowers, daisies and daffodils.

Filler Flower

I think you might have guessed that filler flowers are used to fill up the empty spaces in an arrangement.

They are usually inserted last, after the mass flower and line flowers are in place. The empty spaces created are filled using filler flowers.

Filler flowers are clusters of multiples flowers in a single stem. They make your bouquet look fuller.

Examples are like baby's breaths, dianthus, pompon asters, feverfews and ferns.

Line Flower

Line flowers defines the shape of the arrangement. It gives the arrangement its height and width. And therefore, it is usually placed first in the flower container.

Line flowers are usually tall flowers like cattails, delphiniums, snapdragons, gladiola and stock.

How To Arrange

This is a basic guideline on how to arrange flowers to make an arrangement. After you have fixed the presoaked foam in the floral container, you begin with inserting the mass flowers first. The flowers will be the highlight of the arrangement. Usually, they are inserted short.

Next, you add in the fillers. This is further add volume to the arrangement and fill up any empty spaces in the arrangement. Then, you can add in some greens to further build the arrangement and not miss any 'holes'.

Only in the last step, you can add the line flowers. For soft curvy line flowers like vines or anthuriums, you can add them around your arrangement. But for straight and hard line flowers, you can add them vertically, making sure the height is proportionate to the height of the arrangement.

Mass flowers --> Filler flowers --> Line flowers

These are just basic rules, when you practise more and become more experienced, you'll find that you do not need to follow this rules. You make the arrangement your way, your style.
