Elements Of Floral Design

By now, you would have learned the primary and secondary principles of floral design.

But, what are elements? Elements are more than just guidelines. We use these elements to create our design.

When all the elements of floral design are present in your arrangement, you have succeeded in your design. Learn them well.

They are Line, Form, Space, Texture and Color.

Line

In floral design, line is an important element. There are two types of line. Static line and dynamic line.

Static lines are lines that are not moving. In some flower arrangements, you can see that the lines are motionless.

Dynamic lines are more interesting. They move in an unexpected way and that makes your arrangement interesting.

Form

Form is the shape of your arrangement. Form includes all shapes and styles, sizes and materials.

There are 8 basic flower arrangement forms and they are arc, circle or oval, curve or crescent, right angle, S curve or Hogarths curve, triangular, horizontal or vertical.

If you want to know the details of each form, you can click here.

Space

Space is referring to an area within the arrangement. In floral design, we have void space, positive space and negative space.

Void space is simply a gap in the arrangement. Sometimes the void space can attract your attention to other interesting parts of the arrangement.

Positive space are space filled with materials. It contains shape, form, color and texture. It is what we see.

Negative space are purposely made. It is important to the arrangement's appearance. There is a reason why there are no materials there.

It is different from void space because it is planned.

Texture

Texture is the condition of the materials you use in your flower arrangement.

Whether you use rough or smooth surfaced materials, shining materials or dried materials. You must know when to use glittery materials and when to use dried materials.

What is the theme?

Relate texture to the theme of the arrangement. For exmaple, you can't use dried flowers in your spring bouquet. That is inappropriate.

So, texture play an important role in your arrangement. Take a look at this arrangement.

Color

The importance of color in an arrangement cannot be denied.

By using the color wheel as your guide, you could achieve color harmony in your arrangement.

You could create an analogous arrangement, complementary color arrangement, monochromatic arrangement, split complementary arrangement and triadic arrangement.

All these color combinations will give harmony to your arrangement. Find out what these are here.
