Bouquet Tossing... Should I?
Bouquet tossing has been a famous tradition or custom in weddings and is still practiced till today.
How is it done? and Why?
Back in the old days, brides are thought as very lucky and whoever gets a 'piece' of the bride is considered lucky, too.
At first, guests would tear off the bride's wedding gown. Later on, the brides felt that they wanted to keep their gown so they looked for another alternative.
They would toss their stockings. It is believed that if the stockings landed on you, you will be the next getting married.
After some time, the tradition of stockings tossing became obsolete.
It was considered embarassing for the bride and later the tradition evolved to bouquet tossing and garter tossing which is practised until today.
A garter is silk band tied on the bride's leg. The groom would remove it and throw it to the groomsmen.
The action of removing the garter symbolizes that the bride is giving up her virginity to the groom. Then, the groom would toss it to the groomsmen.
Whoever gets it, is the next to marry.
The bride would then toss her bouquet to the lady guests. Similarly, the one who catches it will be next in line.
The one who caught the garter would then wear the garter onto the leg of the one who caught the bouquet.
This ceremony is usually done after cake-cutting.
Though some may have fun in the event, some of course dislike the idea. The unmarried dislike to be in the limelight. They thought it was a personal and sensitive issue.
Some dislike the fact that they could get hurt while trying to grab the bouquet.
I love my bridal bouquet... what if I prefer to keep it?
Sure... why not? Bridal bouquets are so beautiful these days and they represent a significant event in your life. In fact, many brides chose to keep their bouquet and have them preserved.
That is why they toss the centerpiece or the corsage instead. Or you can also ask your florist to make a small toss bouquet for you. Just for the event. It can just be a small bouquet with the same flowers as your wedding bouquet.
Or you don't want to have the event at all....
Alternative to Bouquet Tossing
To avoid anyone from getting hurt while trying to grab your bouquet, you can hand out simple tokens like sweets or candys to the children. You can also giveaway presents to your bridesmaids as a way to say thank them.
You can even throw rose petals or blow bubbles and not expect your guests to catch anything.
These are all simple activities just to make your wedding ceremony more interesting.
So now, to toss or not to toss?
