Best Ikebana Books

Books review by Liztiany Zakaria

In this section, I will recommend the best ikebana books which I find very educational and interesting to read. It is actually the book that I've purchased and found that it contributes to many ikebana arrangement ideas.

One book that I find very useful is this book.

Ikebana : Japanese Flower Arrangement For Today's Interiors by Diane Norman and Michelle Cornell.

Why did I purchase this book in the first place? First of all, because of the author.

The author, Diane Norman, is an ikebana master in the Ohara School, one of the top schools for studying the art of ikebana.

In my opinion, it is better to learn ikebana from the person who learnt from the pioneers of ikebana. This book will give you reliable information from a reputable source.

Diane's designs are very modern and sophisticated, which I think is suitable for today's homes.

There are diagrams and sketches on how to create your own ikebana arrangements, which are very helpful.

The arrangements are divided into four seasons, summer, autumn, winter and spring.

And not forgetting, she also explains about the techniques of ikebana like moribana and nageire.

So, I find that this book is a great teacher and the designs are very practical.

I think it is one of the best ikebana book.

Another book which I think might interest you is Enchanting Ikebana :

Japanese Flower Arrangement by Reiko Takenaka.

What's so special about this ikebana book? For beginners of Ikebana like me, I find that the explanations are easy to understand.

For example, there is this arrangement of spray mums and chinese quince. The concept was to arrange branches bearing fruits so that they appear as if they were growing from the garden. This is clearly one of the concepts of ikebana.

Preserving the materials natural state in the arrangement.

Another thing about this book that I liked is the use of simple materials to create stunning designs. You could see that the materials used are very less but yet when arranged they create an impact that you will be satisfied with.

Apart from that, the designs are arranged according to where you want your home. There are designs for the living room, kitchen and even bathrooms.

Not forgetting, the book also introduces the tools used in ikebana arranging.

So, if you want to learn ikebana in a simple way, this is one of the best ikebana book I recommend.
